We don't care about each other.
I know, that sounds harsh, but it's the truth. Sure, maybe you care about your mom, dad, daughter, son, boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, dog and whoever else you see on a daily basis. But what about everyone else. There are about 6.8 billion people in the world and each of us probably cares about 40 of those people, and trust me, 40 is really stretching it. That's like 0.0000006% of the world. I think the main idea that most people have is that if our family and friends are good, than everything is good. So with that thought, most people ignore the idea of caring about anyone outside their comfy circle.
There are also a lot of people who want to care. They read the news and they see the things going on in the world and think, 'I should do something!' But when they really start to think about it, there are so many excuses not to, like, 'I don't have the time,' 'It could be dangerous,' 'I wouldn't really make a difference,' 'There are a lot of people helping, so they don't need me.' Many people recognize that there are things and people in the world who need to be cared for, but it's more comfortable to keep those things at an arm's distance.
Of course, there are plenty of people who do get involved, who do care. Unfortunately, not enough, because if there were then there would be a lot less problems and a lot more changes.
You'd think that most Americans would want to get involved. Everyone seems obsessed with scandals and there are so many scandals going on out there. But it seems as if the scandals don't involve celebrities getting drunk/not wearing panties/going to rehab/fornicating then no one really cares.
So here's the thing: I just turned 25. Aside from school fundraisers I did while growing up and a couple of little things here and there, I've realized that I've never really made a difference. I think I fall into the group of people who want to care, but have a lot of excuses.
That being said, it's time for a change! Starting today I am going to profile different activism groups and go to events and functions and become involved. There are some seriously awful things going on in the world that people choose not to see.
I had a baby a year ago. I remember looking at my beautiful baby girl and noticing how innocent and helpless she was. It made me think about all the babies and children in the world who were the exact same way, yet they had no one to care for them like my daughter did. Then I thought, not just the children, but the adults, the environment, the animals, everyone and everything who didn't have anyone to protect them and help them.
Every week I will post stories about different groups, information about upcoming events around the country, as well as updates about my own activism.
Here we go...
